Appliques!!!

I decided to be a little adventurous on my next project and tried on appliqué... well, the semi, output is as below...

However, this is for my niece who is 8 years old and currently the quilt top is too small...
So, I've added a few more sashing's at the top's and side.... and thus, needed more appliqué...
I have 6 flowers and 4 butterflies to be affix onto this quilt top...
After all the sashing, the piece is now pretty huge... standing at a bold 65" by 50"...
Perfect single size quilt but oh gosh, I've got to quilt it after this....aaaarrrggghhhh...
Wish me luck folks!

Colorful Strips!

My Colorful Strip Baby Quilt finished over a week ago but because it was meant as a surprise, I could not post a blog on it until the recipient receives it!
Well, the recipient finally received it early this morning, and I hope the wait was worth it.

As usual, photos are all courtesy of hubby :)
I used the balance of "It's a Hoot" CP purchased few months back... I used up all the pink colored ones for the Diamond Baby Quilt and the balance pieces went through my scissors and ended up as strips and joined together to produce 9 blocks as below.

For the backing, I used cotton with small blue prints.

Well, the recipients (ie. parents) are happy, so let's just hope the little bundle will be too when he receives it... :)

Colorful Strips!

I'm not sewing fast enough and that causes delay in posting new things on the blog.
Thus, i thought I'll just share the working progress instead... :) to replace baby blue, I decided to make another baby quilt using the balance of the "It's a Hoot" charm pack (previously purchased from Zara @ A Fabric Case) and this is what it produced :)

Then i got extra hardworking last night and completed 9 squares of this...

Now, I have to piece them together... add some borders here and there and hope the top will be done over the weekend... that leaves me 1 week to finish quilting... hmmm, such a heavy challenge!

p/s: Being an amateur in quilting, I found my biggest challenge is in getting some nice quilting fabrics like Moda's Charm Packs and etc. Thus, I made a "huge" investment and bought them direct from the States. I'll be putting some of them up for sale on my blog soon to help other beginners like me start of on quilting :)

Baby Blue - failure!

I guess due to the extend of the delay, many would have guessed something was not right! Well, to those who did, you got that right!
Baby Blue has been my greatest challenge since I started quilting (not that I have done many)... and I must say, I'm pretty embarrassed at the output...
It was such a challenge and I had to undo the stitches (done on all 3 pieces) a few times and still could not get it right :(

The patchwork was good but somehow quilting was tough... to make things worst, the backing cloth (printed felt) that I purchased was too small and so I had to add cloth at the back, making all the alignment wrong :(
And did I mention how difficult it is to undo stitches on a felt? Boy, that's another challenge!

This Baby Blue was meant for a friends baby, due in May, but I'm so embarrassed at  it that I've decided to make another project for  him... I was so effected by it that I started preparing the quilt last night itself! Baby's due in May and so I really have to hurry!
But the sewing will have to wait as I'm off to Kuching tomorrow, to a remote Aborigine Village to offer some social service... so, till then... adios....

Baby Blue - updates

So yeah, I'm a little (or should I say a lot) delayed in my baby blue quilt...
Few reason's leading to that and so I decided to just post some updates first...
Reason #1 - I didn't use any charm packs for this quilt and thus had to cut fabrics from large pieces of cloth, and might I just add here that it's a real tedious job... and worst is when they don't match in size :(
Reason #2 - I spoiled my roller cutter (making cutting even harder) and had to rely on my scissors to cut the pieces...
Reason #3 -  I don't think beginners should work with dark colors (you will see what I mean from the pic below), I'm having a big problem finding the right thread to quilt! I tried white, blue and black... and then someone suggested a transparent nylon thread which I'm purchasing today...

So hopefully, by the end of this weekend, the quilt will be ready... and now... for a little glimpse on what it looks like :)

Diamond Baby Quilt - trial #2

So, here goes trial number 2, a baby quilt for a future niece to come :)
Baby's dues in May and being an apprentice to quilting I was worried if it would complete in time but wahlah...  a pink diamond baby quilt with orange yellow borders :)
Hubby really like this piece and even offered to take the pics for me... I used "It's a Hoot" charm pack and selected only the pink pieces (so i needed 2 charm pack to complete this piece)

Instead of the usual cotton backing, I used printed felt cloth (the texture is so soft) and also cotton batting... cotton batting is so much easier to work with compared to the fiber ones... they cost higher but will definitely be my choice of batting from now :)

I also wanted to explore the pattern stitches function on my machine and decided on tiny heart shapes along the side :)

And now, more pics courtesy of hubby...

Next project is also a baby quilt, but this one's for a baby boy... so blue... here I come :)
